What to Wear for Engagement Photos

What to Wear for Engagement Photos

Engagement photos are all about ditchin’ the wedding planning for a few hours and falling in love all over again. But prepping for an engagement session can sometimes be a little stressful, I totally get that! My goal is for your engagement session to be as chill and stress-free as possible, so here are a few tips for what to wear for engagement photos.

The Big Picture

During an engagement session, my couples get to wear 2 outfits. We’ll take about 20-30 minutes of photos in each outfit! That’s plenty of time to showcase your personal style and be guided through a variety of poses by yours truly.

Most couples opt for 1 casual and 1 dressy outfit. These descriptions are super subjective to each person, so take that in any direction you’d like. Be fancy or wear flannel, as long as you love it, that’s all that matters!

Tip #1: Location

Location is everything, right? Once you’ve got an idea of where your engagement photos will take place, it’ll be easier to narrow down your outfits. If you’ll be taking photos in the red rocks of Sedona or the Phoenix desert, neutrals with small pops of color will be great. If your location is downtown with a neutral background, don’t be afraid of bolder colors!

Tip #2: Layers

Layers photograph really well. Infuse a few layers with your personal style and you’ll be good to go! A light jacket, sweater, or cardigan always looks great.

For a first outfit, many people commonly choose a blouse or short sleeve button-down with a jacket and jeans. For their second outfit, many folks choose a flowy dress with heels or a long sleeve button-down and fashion-forward sneakers.

Get inspired by your go-to outfit for date night and don’t forget to accessorize: watches, earrings, hats, ascots, or rings add visual interest to your photos.

Tip #3: Complement Eachother

The matchy-matchy trend of the ’90s is out. Instead, try choosing a color palette with similar tones. Pairing a few neutral colors with a pop of color always looks great! Don’t be afraid of patterns or bold colors either! If either of you is unsure about where to start, begin with a piece you love and build on it from there. You’d be surprised how quickly it all comes together!

Below are some inspirational photos of my previous couples and what they chose to wear. My best tip is to choose outfits that you not only look good in but feel good in. Your confidence will shine through in your photos. Trust me!

Bonus Tips

  • Engagement photos are the perfect excuse to schedule your hair and makeup trial. That being said, stay true to who you are and keep it simple.
  • Wear your favorite outfit second during photos. Those sunset photos with your fave outfit will be dreamy!
  • Bring a comfy pair of shoes. You may walk a bit to that epic sunset spot.
  • Bring all of your clothes on hangers.
  • Don’t forget the proper undergarments and extra accessories.
  • Pack a small bag the night before. Include your shoes, accessories, makeup, lint roller, double-sided tape, hairbrush, and anything else you may need!
