Several months ago Mike and I strolled through Urban Outfitters; I was gushing at the decor while I spotted Mike pick up a book next to the records. I wasn’t sure what he held in his hands, but he set it back down and continued browsing. In the next few minutes, he would pick up the same book and set it back down again. I knew he wanted it, but he doesn’t typically spend money on himself. So I did what any sensible wife would do, I bought it. 😉
Little did I know this book would uncover a new hobby for Mike as a mixologist. He LOVES making drinks, trying new recipes, and even making his own. He’s a true craftsman in many ways. Our little home bar collection has grown and we’ve acquired several more cocktail books. I recently gifted him a unique cocktail book entitled, “The Essential New York Times Book of Cocktails.” It includes over 350 recipes paired with new and old writing from the NY Times.
Mike has paired his two favorite hobbies and we now host friends each week for board games and cocktails. This is one of the sweet, sweet reasons I’m SO excited to be moving into our first house together so that we can host friends more!! (A blog on that topic will surely come soon!)
Here’s one of my favorite drinks from “The Essential New York Times Book of Cocktails!”

1. Muddle 1 apple slice in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass filled with ice.
2. Add white rum, lemon juice, simple syrup, and bitters into the glass.
