Vendor Highlight // Trego the DJ

Vendor Highlight with Trego the DJ

In my experience, an amazing DJ is one of the most important vendors to hire for a wedding. I’ve seen the good and not-so-good DJ’s of the wedding industry and I’m here to share more about one of the Valley’s topnotch hype men and disc jockey’s, Andrew Trego!

An amazing DJ needs great energy, a kick-ass music library, and the ability to work with a couple to ensure their wedding day runs smoothly; and Trego has all of these and more!

Here’s a look at my recent interview with Trego!

What’s your background and why are you passionate about DJing?

I started DJing almost six years ago. I came in with performing experience as an actor and host. Through the VOX DJs Academy class, they taught me the rest. With a musical background, I picked up DJing quickly and started DJing weddings in June of 2015. Something clicked — I found my purpose.

Retrospectively, I’ve realized that my love for performing and my love for serving people were united when I worked for a Disney Cruise Line right after college. I have always been a performer and enjoy lifting the spirits of others; and that has never been more apparent than when Peter Pan was flying through the air or when a little kid got to meet their favorite character.

The “you get what you give” vibe is the exact same with DJing weddings. Seeing the happiness of others makes me happy and using my performing interests for the greater good is what it’s all about.

What kind of events do you DJ?

I would say 80% of the events that I DJ are weddings. That’s what I prefer. Two people in love, looking at me to make their day the best celebration possible. Add in friends, family, food, drinks, beautiful venues and vendors with dancing — what more could you ask for?

I do also really like to do corporate events where I can MC the program and then DJ the after-parties as well. Those are really fun. I’ve even hosted game shows and made typically boring meetings fun. I love that too!

Who are your fave couples to work with?

I’m so passionate about my job that I primarily look for clients who are passionate about each other and their big day. I can help amplify their joy but I can’t be the beginning, middle, and end of the celebration because then it becomes about me and it’s not — it’s about them. I’m the picture frame, and they’re the picture.

How early should couples hire a DJ?

I mean, you know what I’m going to say: ASAP. There’s only one of me and it’s first-come, first-serve. So many couples follow an arbitrary wedding planning template they find online that says to book their DJ about 6-9 months before the wedding. So they wait. But if they have a highly sought after date like a Saturday in October, dollars to donuts, I’m already booked. If couples are eyeing a certain vendor, I recommend reaching out and inquiring as soon as the date is confirmed.

What makes you different from Uncle Joe?

Nothing, I am Uncle Joe. Lol just kidding. 😉

  1. One time, I was asked “How are you different than your competition? What is your brand?” I said, “Well, it’s me. You either like me or you don’t. I’m either your cup of tea or I’m not.”

2. Maybe a couple’s budget is their highest priority. Maybe Uncle Joe, who has some old vinyl in his garage and hasn’t ever DJed a wedding before but DJed clubs in the 90s – he’ll DJ the wedding for free and is going to do a good job for you.

Or maybe the music and the experience of their guests at the reception is one of the most important priorities in order to make their big day a success. Then maybe they should consider the 5’6” game show host (that used to be Peter Pan) who is going to use his DJing, MCing, professionalism, and experience of DJing over 300 weddings to give them unforgettably unique and beautiful memories.

3. The highest compliment is when guests think I’ve known the couple for years before the wedding. I want to be an extension of their friends and family. I want to come off as their Uncle Joe who just happens to be a luxury wedding DJ. I never want to be a stranger in the corner. Connection to the couple, connection to the crowd, connection to the present moment. That’s everything!
