Our 5th Wedding Anniversary

Our 5th Wedding Anniversary

Suzy Goodrick Wedding Photographer

Mike and I are celebrating our five year wedding anniversary today! I’d like to share a few personal notes about marriage, the adventures we’ve experienced, and our wedding photos by the wonderful Kinsey Mhire.

In some ways, the past five years have flown by and our wedding day seems like yesterday, but in other ways, it’s hard for me to imagine all the life we’ve lived during the past five years. For those who may not know our meet-cute or who are romantics who love a great story, here’s a piece of ours.

Our Story

Mike and I have met twice in our lives as very different people. The first time, we met while working at Target in high school. We rocked khaki and red, flirted in the break room, but never dated or pursued anything beyond that. We had a spark, but from the surface, it seemed our values and passions didn’t align. I was the “good girl,” and Mike was..let’s say, in somewhat of a rebellious phase.

After a few short months of awkwardly flirting, I left Target and we parted ways; but not before becoming friends on Facebook and obviously stalking each other. Over the next five years, we’d grow up, pursue new jobs, degrees, and passions on our own.

At the end of my last semester of college, just weeks from finishing my degree and moving to San Francisco, Mike and I ran into one another. Although we were both living in Phoenix at the time, we happened to both be attending a conference in Costa Mesa. In the timespan between our Target days and reuniting in California, we had both gained a sense of who we were and the direction we were headed. And miraculously, we seemed to align just perfectly. Long story short, we started dating quickly after, Mike moved with me to SF, and a few months later, we were engaged! As cheesy as it sounds, we just knew. 😉

Our Wedding

While planning for our wedding, we knew we wanted a small, intimate wedding with our closest family and friends. We had just leased a tiny, 300 sq foot studio in the city and were completely broke, but knew we wanted to get hitched soon. We quickly decided on a (very) short engagement, planned a wedding in less than 2 months, and got married on a foggy, beautiful, serene day in San Francisco on November 2, 2013. And no, we weren’t pregnant. Thanks for not asking. 😉

Our wedding was the wedding of our dreams. Truly. We had 35 of our closest family and friends celebrate with us. My dress was from Urban Outfitters, my flowers were from the local market, and we shared our vows (written by Mike) in my best friend’s backyard. I loved that our family and friends were not only there, but a part of the day; steaming dresses, cooking dinner, and tearin’ up that dance floor (ahem, Luke!).

Our wedding day was 100% the wedding of my dreams; intimate, authentic, and FUN. Looking back on our photos puts me right back there, feeling the excitement and pure joy of what marriage would hold for us.

Marriage is a beautiful, vulnerable, and life-giving journey. Mike and I have experienced many highs and lows throughout our marriage, and I’m grateful to say that at the end of both the good and hard days, we’re still madly in love. We’ve endured job losses, countless moves, grave illness, but we’ve also experienced traveling together, building trust, and discovering new passions and hobbies. I’m proud to say we’re not the same Mike and Suzy as when we shared our vows five years ago; we’ve both grown and morphed, adapted and endured, and are better humans because of the experiences we’ve shared.

In celebration of our 5 year anniversary, here are 5 of my favorite things about my boo thing.

1 | Mike is always passionate, rarely apathetic. He gives 500% percent to everything he invests in. Mike doesn’t give half of his heart to anything or anyone. If you’re a friend, you know he’ll be there at the drop of a hat. If you’ve worked with Mike, you know his capabilities go far beyond his resume. He’s an incredible gift.

2 | His dad jokes are the best in all the land. But really. Although Mike isn’t a father in the traditional sense, he is an incredible godfather and uncle to our bestie’s son, Sully. It’s pure joy to watch him care for and love Sully like his own.

3 | I love his willingness to try anything at least once. From disc golf to board games to traveling across Europe, I love his enthusiasm to try anything.

4 | He’s a man of deep conviction. Mike will fight against injustice, use his voice for the oppressed, and be an example for others in standing up for what and who he believes in.

5 | I love his style, from bowties to perms he does his own thing. He’s a babe!

Mike still looks at me with the same smitten face he did on our wedding day. I feel like I won the freaking jackpot. Babe, you’re my person and I wouldn’t trade our life for anything. To infinity and beyond.
