San Diego Beach Cottage Vacation // Rest for the Soul

“Every person needs to take one day away.  A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future.  Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for.  Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.”
– Maya Angelou

I have always been a proponent of taking time off and feeding the soul. To put it simply, I believe that every aspect of our lives will benefit when we take time to rest. When the burdens of life are laid to rest we create room for the unearthed dreams in our lives to be discovered. The more we create margin in our schedules, emotions, and minds, the stronger and faster our dreams can grow, just like a well watered garden.

Family-Vacation_0001This week, my family did exactly that – got away. And it was fantastic!
My parents, sister, her friend Kristie, Mike and I went to San Diego to relax, sit on the beach, and eat delicious seafood. We stayed at an ADORABLE beach cottage just 2 blocks from the water, it was our first time working with Airbnb and it didn’t disappoint!

The sunset cliffs were just minutes away from where we stayed, we watched the sun set and of course, took many family photos thanks to my mom. 😉

Family-Vacation_0002We set up camp at Mission Beach for an afternoon, and although we were prepared with loads of sunscreen, my mom still got burnt like a lobster. (But of course she won’t let me post a photo! 😉 Love you Mom! )

Family-Vacation_0003We also stopped by the iconic Donut Bar in downtown San Diego. They open early in the morning and close up shop when they sell out of their daily batch of donuts. Oh, and did I mention these donuts are the size of your face?
Every. Single. Bite. was full of deliciousness.

Family-Vacation_0006Seaport Village is always a must for our family. Michael’s birthday happened to fall on our first day in San Diego, so I surprised him with a Brixton Ivy cap for his birthday from The Village Hat Shop.

We headed inland for some after dinner treats one night and this dessert may not look like much, but it was one of the best things this foodie could have tried! This fruity pebbles macaron from Blush Desserts was sandwiched between cookie dough ice cream AND topped with actual fruity pebbles. Cereal in my ice cream might be a new breakfast ritual!

Family-Vacation_0009Xenia with her two minnie macarons and Kristie about to dive into her cookies and cream macaron with strawberry cheesecake ice cream, don’t these look heavenly?!
Family-Vacation_0010The beach, the breezy salt water air, ice cream, a good book, donuts, sushi, coffee..I mean, what more do you need on a vacation?

Family-Vacation_0008

It was so good for my soul to spend a few days with my family, and Kristie who’s now officially an honorary daughter (especially because she thinks my dad is one of the most hilarious people on the planet). It’s been a crazy year so far in our family with Mike being sick, you can read up on his health here. But getting away was just what we needed. I don’t know how long Mike will continue to battle this unknown disease, but I feel rejuvenated to tackle whatever comes our way next. That doesn’t mean I’m happy every day, or that I won’t be honest about how I’m doing, but it means that my mustard seed sized faith is growing, ever so slightly.
